Alexander 'Ice'Queen

As the title suggests, Ice Queen is in the mind of Sarah Burton when she designed this collection. In the hand of Sarah Burton, the brand gains a sense of serenity, but still maintains McQueen's dramatic aesthetic. The palette is mainly black, grey and white. Most of the pieces have fur trims and zipper details, and some looks have bondage over structured jackets and flowing dress. There was no handbags presented, so we'll just focus on shoes. Lace-up boots and fabulous heelless wedges with metal detail are shown. We'll soon see Daphne Guinness and Lady Gaga walking around in them. My favourites are two dresses with china sew on the bodice and wedges. There are rumours that Sarah Burton will be designing the wedding gown of Catherine Middleton. If it's true, she'll be the most fashion-forward bride in the history.

Michelle Obama in Alexander McQueen

The First Lady wore an Alexander McQueen Resort 2011 gown to welcome China President Hu Jintao. Alexander McQueen's design is hard to pull off and she is definitely taking a risk by doing so. I have never seen any First Lady who dares to make this bold fashion choice. But maybe this is why Michelle Obama becomes the new fashion icon. She has wonderful toned arms and she's not afraid to show them. She made some modification to the sleeves of the gown to make it less puffy but I think this made the gown loses the appeal of McQueen bold, regal design. Anyway, she's making progress by wearing this gown. Let's hope that she will wear Oscar de la Renta next time.
